The Ladies Posse — An early UK 1989-99 female DJ collective were Angela “Lady G” Francis, Sharon “Crystal Tipps” Stoned, Tanya T “Caramella” Wright and Sara D.
Having met through Bristol’s interconnected music scene and a shared love of vinyl, they formed the crew and started DJing out in 1989. Their sets crossed genres — proto-jungle and breakbeat, reggae, ska and dub, deep house, hip hop, funk, disco and R&B. as heard on their weekly four hour shows on pirate station SPEC FM, broadcasting on 101.25 across St Pauls and Easton over three years.
Throughout the 1990s they DJ’d across Bristol, appearing on BBC2’s Dance Energy, in 1991 and promoted their own events; the anti-apartheid FREEDOM 90 gigs and PHILLIE NITES at Thekla in 1998–99. Along the way they shared bills with DJs including Goldie, Daddy G, DJ Die, Roni Size, Krust, 4hero, Nick Warren, Lisa Loud, Nancy Noise, Jazzy B, DJ Milo, Mushroom and the Scratch Perverts.
This site, gradually being built from their surviving archive, adds a missing thread into Bristol’s musical heritage.
